What is the play The Fever about?
In a shabby hotel room, in a poverty-stricken country, a nameless narrator lies confined to bed by a fever. As the fever burns through the protagonist, outside, political unrest and repression rage. The narrator is struck by a growing awareness of the realities of suffering and inequality occurring nationwide, and as he slowly recovers, he must grapple with existential questions of his own privilege and complicity in a broken system.
The History of The Fever
The Fever started life as a monologue, which Shawn performed in private apartments in New York. The show then premiered off-Broadway in 1990, also starring Shawn, and won the 1991 Obie Award for Best Play. The solo show has since been performed in several countries and major venues, including the Royal Court in London and the Avignon Festival in France. In 2004, a film adaptation was made, starring Vanessa Redgrave. Other acclaimed performers who have tackled the piece include Cate Blanchett, Tobias Menzies and Lili Taylor.
Cast and Creative Team of The Fever Off-Broadway
The Fever is written and performed by Wallace Shawn. Shawn is an actor and playwright, perhaps best known for his iconic roles voicing Rex in the Toy Story franchise, as Vizzini in The Princess Bride, and as Mr Hall in the 90s teen comedy Clueless. His other acting roles include My Dinner With Andre, A Master Builder, and Vanya on 42nd Street with long-term collaborator André Gregory (who directs What We Did Before Our Moth Days).
An accomplished playwright, Shawn is known for his often absurd, boundary-pushing, politically charged writing. His playwriting credits include Aunt Dan and Lemon, Marie and Bruce, and The Designated Mourner.
