The Hours Tickets

Metropolitan Opera House

Grammy Award-winning composer Kevin Puts’s operatic take on the award-winning novel is a new opera that is not to be missed.

The Hours At The Met Opera Tickets

The Hours returns to the Metropolitan Opera House this year after a sold-out run in the 2022 season. Based on the 1998 novel by Michael Cunningham and the 2002 film adaptation, the opera is about three women in different times and places, inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel, Mrs Dalloway. New York audiences will be gripped by the stories of each heroine.

About The Hours

The opera takes place on a single day and centers around three women living in different years. Each woman feels alone, trying to settle into their everyday life. By the end of the opera, they each transcend time and start to understand that they’re not alone in how they feel.

The audience is taken through two acts over three hours and transported back to the 1900s. Each heroine has a distinct style of music, making it easy to distinguish the year they’re in and their surroundings, also helping audiences understand their pain.

The Cast of The Hours

Grammy Award-winning soprano, Renée Fleming, makes her return as Clarissa Vaughan after making her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1991. Tony Award-winning actress and singer, Kelli O'Hara stars alongside Renée Fleming as Laura Brown. This will be Kelli’s fourth season at the Metropolitan Opera. Finishing the casting of the three main characters is Joyce DiDonato. DiDonato is a three-time Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano and is also making her return as Virginia Woolf in The Hours.

The History of The Hours Opera

The production first debuted at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia in March 2022 in the form of a concert. Later that same year, The Hours went on to premiere on stage at the Metropolitan Opera House to great acclaim. The idea was suggested to composer, Kevin Puts, by Renée Fleming whilst they were working on another project.

Puts was excited about the idea of the chorus and the main characters intertwining in song and arguing with each other.

THE HOURS is a very powerful interpretation of the novel and the film screenplay. The lives of three women, in different locations and time periods, intersect. The Virginia Woolf novel MRS. DALLOWAY is the motif around which the plot revolves. Beyond Read more
