What is the opera Turandot about?
Set in a mythic China of ‘Legendary times’, the story follows cold-hearted Princess Turandot and her suitors' quest to win her heart. Any prince looking to marry the princess must answer three riddles, and if they fail, they will be executed. But when the courageous prince Calàf answers all three riddles correctly, Turandot still wants to avoid marrying him. So, the prince comes up with a test of his own - if Turandot can correctly guess his name by dawn, she must give him her hand; if she cannot, he will be executed. Will the prince be able to thaw Turandot's icy heart?
Turandot is Puccini’s last opera, which was left unfinished when he passed away unexpectedly in 1924. The opera was completed by composer Franco Alfano, premiering in 1926, and the production has since been performed globally. The score is unusual for an opera, yet is still recognizable as Puccini; it’s no wonder this opera is a staple at many opera houses globally. Puccini researched Chinese music origins to ensure he incorporated an authentic melody into the opera and the story of Turandot can be linked back to The Book of One Thousand and One Days, a book of short stories by François Pétis de la Croix inspired by Middle Eastern folklore.
Who are the cast of Turandot at the Met Opera?
Three extraordinary casts bring Puccini’s masterwork to life, with sopranos Angela Meade (Ernani), Rebecca Nash (Elektra), Anna Pirozzi (Macbeth), and Liudmyla Monastyrska (Aida) starring as the titular princess Turandot, opposite tenors Michael Fabiano (Stiffelio), Brian Jagde (Arabella), and Roberto Alagna (Roméo et Juliette), playing the courageous prince Calàf.
Who are the creative team of Turandot?
Franco Zeffirelli was an Italian director, producer, designer and politician, often considered to be one of the most significant directors of the 20th Century. He is best known for his lavish stagings of classic operas, and his award-winning film adaptations of Shakespeare plays, including The Taming of the Shrew starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Conductors for this production include Carlo Rizzi (La Bohème), former head of the Welsh National Opera, and Oksana Lyniv (The Flying Dutchman), who made her Met Opera debut conducting Turandot in the 2023/24 season to critical acclaim. In 2021, Lyniv made history as the first woman to conduct at the Bayreuth Festival and in 2022 she became the first woman totake on the role of music director of Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
