What is the play A Man for All Seasons about?

In the court of Henry VIII, Sir Thomas More is a man of morals, beloved by all. Lord Chancellor, scholar, ambassador, advisor and close friend of the King, More is a beacon of morality and a key member of the court. But when the King’s wife, Catherine of Aragon, fails to provide him with an heir, Henry demands a divorce so he can marry his mistress, Anne Boleyn. As a devout Catholic, More is torn between his integrity and religious scruples and his loyalty to his king. Grappling with his beliefs, the Lord Chancellor commits a jaw-dropping act of resistance. His conscience may be clear, but More might just pay the ultimate price for defying the King… Originally written as a radio play for the BBC, A Man for All Seasons first premiered in 1960 at the Gielgud Theatre to critical acclaim. It has received many revivals and adaptations since, with runs on Broadway and internationally. The play has also received two screen adaptations, including an Academy Award-winning film version in 1966, which starred Paul Scofield, who originated the role in the West End, as More. With themes of power, morality, identity and standing for your beliefs in the face of adversity, this “elegant and imposing” (Telegraph) drama is as timeless as ever.

Who are the cast of A Man for All Seasons?

Martin Shaw “conveys saintly gravitas” (The Times), leading the cast as Sir Thomas More. At 80 years old, Shaw gives an impressive performance as the staunchly devout Lord Chancellor. Shaw is perhaps best known for playing the titular role on Inspector George Gently, and for his on-screen performances in The Professionals and Judge John Deed, but he is no stranger to the stage, either. Shaw’s theatre credits include a performance opposite Sir Lawrence Olivier in Saturday, Sunday, Monday at the National Theatre, as well as roles in Look Back in Anger and A Streetcar Named Desire in the West End and a Tony-nominated performance in An Ideal Husband on Broadway. This is also Shaw’s second time performing as Sir Thomas More, as he first tackled the part almost 20 years ago in a 2006 production at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Joining Shaw in the cast are Gary Wilmot, Annie Kingsnorth, Edward Bennett, Sam Phillips, Orlando James, Hari Kang, Nicholas Day, Calum Finlay, Asif Khan, Sam Parks and Louisa Sextona, with further casting to be announced.

A Tony winner and two-time Academy Award and BAFTA winner, Bolt’s other credits include the screenplays for Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago as well as plays The Last of the Wine, The Tiger and the Horse and Vivat! Vivat Regina! The production is directed by Jonathan Church (Singin’ in the Rain, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby), who previously directed Shaw in Hobson’s Choice. Church is the former Artistic Director of the Birmingham Repertory and Chichester Festival Theatres, and the current Artistic Director of the Sydney Theatre Company.
