So stop dreaming - wake up and snag tickets to this “joyously OTT, genderfluid” (TimeOut) Dream today!

What is the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream about?

“Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

Hermia loves Lysander, and Lysander loves Hermia. Helena loves Demetrius, and Demetrius loves… Hermia. When Hermia’s father, the Duke of Athens, disapproves of her betrothal to Lysander, the lovers escape into the forest. They are pursued by Demetrius, who hopes to win Hermia’s hand instead, and Helena - Hermia’s best friend - who has been spurned by Demetrius and wants to get him back. But “the course of true love never did run smooth”... and when mischievous fairy Puck meddles in the lover's affairs, a sprinkling of fairy dust causes both men's affections to shift, and the women to turn on each other.

The ‘Rude Mechanicals’, a gang of labourers-turned-amateur actors, have set up shop in the forest to rehearse a play, but their plans go awry when their leader, Bottom, crosses Puck’s path and is transformed into an ass.

Meanwhile, the king and queen of Fairyland, Oberon and Titania, are having relationship issues of their own; after they quarrel, another love spell is cast and one of the sovereigns falls head-over-heels for with the actor-turned-donkey…

Will the lovers untangle their hearts and find their happy ending? Will the Fairy monarchs reconcile? Will the Mechanicals ever get to stage their play?

Jam-packed with love quad-rangles, fairy dust and frivolity, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. Hytner’s “joyously affirmative” (The Metro) genderswapping production premiered at the Bridge in 2019 and left audiences spellbound, later bringing a bit of sparkle to lockdown, streaming for free on YouTube as part of NTLive. If you missed out the first time around, don't be a fool - book today and join in the magic!
