I’m Sorry, Prime Minister Tickets: A Satirical Farewell

The final chapter in one of Britain’s most beloved political satires arrives in the West End as I’m Sorry, Prime Minister opens at the Apollo Theatre for a strictly limited run. This new play, written and directed by Yes, Minister co-creator Jonathan Lynn, brings back the iconic duo of Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey Appleby—now older, no wiser, and as delightfully devious as ever. Starring Griff Rhys Jones and Clive Francis, this “sharp and witty” (British Theatre Guide) production promises a night of nostalgia and plenty of laughs alongside biting commentary on modern politics.

What is the play I’m Sorry, Prime Minister about?

Set years after his tenure as Prime Minister, Jim Hacker is now the Master of Hacker College, Oxford. However, his peaceful retirement is disrupted when the college committee seeks to remove him from his post and evict him from his college-provided lodgings, following controversial remarks. Desperate, Hacker turns to his old adversary, Sir Humphrey Appleby, whose love for bureaucracy and Latin phrases remains undiminished.

The duo must navigate the challenges of modern academia, generational clashes, and their own ageing minds. Will Sir Humphrey manage to outwit the meddling students and the College Fellowship and save the day for Hacker one last time?

Deftly balancing humour with poignant reflections on legacy, relevance, and the complexities of change, I’m Sorry, Prime Minister serves as the final instalment in the Yes, Minister saga, a series that began on BBC2 in 1980 and continued with Yes, Prime Minister from 1986 to 1988. The original series, co-created by Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay, was renowned for its incisive satire of British politics and the civil service.

Following the death of Antony Jay in 2016, Jonathan Lynn penned this stage adaptation solo, dedicating it to his late writing partner. The play “honours a magnificent comic project” (Guardian) and premiered at the Barn Theatre, Cirencester, in 2023, blending nostalgia with contemporary relevance, addressing issues such as cancel culture, political correctness, and the challenges of aging with both wit and sensitivity.

Who are the cast of I’m Sorry, Prime Minister?

Griff Rhys Jones stars as the ever-bewildered Jim Hacker. A veteran of British comedy, Rhys Jones’ celebrated career includes iconic appearances in Not the Nine O’Clock News and Alas Smith and Jones, as well as extensive stage work. In 2019 Rhys Jones was appointed OBE for services to the National Civic Society Movement, charity and entertainment.

Clive Francis plays the scheming Sir Humphrey Appleby. With a career spanning decades in theatre, television, and film, he is best known for his roles in The Crown, An Inspector Calls, and A Clockwork Orange. His stage roles include Enron, The Madness of King George, An Inspector Calls and his acclaimed one-man production of A Christmas Carol.

Further casting is to be announced.

Who are the creative team of I’m Sorry, Prime Minister?

Jonathan Lynn writes and directs the production. Lynn is a BAFTA Award-winning writer, director, and actor. He is best known as the co-creator and co-writer of the acclaimed BBC series Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister, co-created with Antony Jay, which earned widespread praise for their intelligent political satire. Lynn's other credits include My Cousin Vinny, The Whole Nine Yards, and Clue. Returning to these beloved characters for the first time since the passing of his writing partner, I’m Sorry, Prime Minister offers a poignant and hilarious final chapter for this iconic show.
