What is the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream about?

"Out of this wood do not desire to go. Thou shalt remain here, whether thou wilt or no."

In a society dominated by tyrannical rule, four young lovers - Hermia, Helena, Demetrius and Lysander - escape the city walls to seek refuge in the forest. But little do they know a fierce battle rages in the woods, as the Fairy Queen, Titania, and the Fairy King, Oberon, fight for custody of one of their changelings - a child stolen from the mortal world.

As the Fairy monarchs’ jealousy rages on, Oberon’s mischievous fairy servant Puck casts diabolical spells over the forest - and the young lovers. Day becomes night, and the lines between reality and illusion blur as an out-of-season snowstorm begins to fall. Is this a midsummer night’s dream… or a midsummer nightmare?

This co-production between innovative theatre company Headlong and Shakespeare’s Globe shines a light on the darker corners of Shakespeare's most performed comedy and marks the play's first staging in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
