Adriana Mater in London
Blistering opera Adriana Mater comes to London this winter in a brand new, specially commissioned translation for the English National Opera. This powerful, rarely staged opera about a young woman raising a son in the brutality of war is by acclaimed Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho and comes to the London Coliseum, in the heart of Leicester Square, for a strictly limited season.
What Is the Opera Adriana Mater About?
During a brutal civil war in an unnamed country, a young woman, Adriana, falls pregnant after being violently assaulted by a soldier, Tsargo. Against the advice of her sister, Refka, Adriana chooses to keep the child, whom she names Yonas, concealing the truth of his origins from her son. Raised to believe in love and hope, the optimistic young man later learns the real story of how he was conceived, and is compelled to seek revenge. Can Adriana convince Yonas that true strength lies in mercy, or will he be consumed by the inherited cycle of male violence?
Picking up where the renowned opera Tosca leaves off, Adriana Mater contributes to a bold narrative season at the ENO, centring stories of resistance, resilience, freedom and hope. The opera can be watched as a stand-alone story or paired as a double bill with Tosca.
The History of Adriana Mater
Adriana Mater premiered at the Opéra Bastille in Paris in 2006, directed by Peter Sellars. The opera later debuted in Finland in 2008, and also received premieres in the UK in a concert performance and in the US later that same year.
