Queer joy meets protest in this electric musical about Section 28 from award-winning theatre company Breach.

After the Act Tickets: Power and Protest Take Centre Stage

Head to the Royal Court Theatre this summer for After the Act, a riotous and righteous new musical from the multi-award-winning Breach Theatre. This genre-defying production unpacks the legacy of Section 28 - the UK law that tried to silence LGBTQ+ voices - with glitter, grit, and an 80s synth beat.

Expect classroom rebellions, high-stakes protests, and a chorus of queer voices refusing to be quiet. Whether you lived through Section 28 or you’re discovering it for the first time, this is a slice of history with a big, beating heart - and a banging soundtrack.

What is the After the Act musical about?

After the Act shines a spotlight on one of the UK’s most notorious pieces of legislation, Section 28, and the communities who fought back against it. Set in the late 1980s, the show tells the real stories of teachers, students and activists who found themselves on the frontlines of a culture war, simply for daring to exist.

But don’t expect a dry history lesson: this is a punchy, punky pop musical packed with outrage, hope, and humour. There are abseiling lesbians storming Parliament, impassioned school staff fighting for their students, and young people carving out their identity in spite of a system built to suppress them. It's raw, real, and ridiculously catchy.

After the Act Cast and Creative Team

Breach Theatre (It’s True, It’s True, It’s True) are known for their inventive documentary-style storytelling, and After the Act is no exception. Co-written by Billy Barrett and Ellice Stevens, with a pulsing original score by Frew, this show puts queer history in the spotlight.

On stage, you’ll see a stellar ensemble including Ericka Posadas, Nkara Stephenson, Zachary Willis, Ellice Stevens, Frew, and Calie Hough. Together, they transform into multiple roles (teachers, students, MPs and protestors) delivering a show that’s as shape-shifting as the history it tells.

The Story of After the Act

After the Act debuted to glowing reviews on its UK tour, co-produced by Brighton Dome and Festival, HOME, New Diorama and Warwick Arts Centre. Critics hailed it as “a massive achievement” (The Guardian) and “a euphoric blast of righteous rage” (The Telegraph).

More than a musical, this is a living, breathing archive of resistance. With verbatim text drawn from real interviews, it honours the courage of those who defied censorship and demanded visibility. Whether you’re a history buff, a musical theatre fan, or someone seeking empowering queer stories, After the Act delivers.

Fun fact: during its development, the team visited the UK’s Hall–Carpenter Archive and LGBTQ+ charity Switchboard to piece together these lived experiences.
