What is the opera Albert Herring about?

In the prim and proper village of Loxford, the search for a virtuous May Queen proves fruitless, leading the town's moral guardians to crown the bashful greengrocer Albert Herring as May King instead. Initially overwhelmed by the honour, Albert's unexpected windfall and the influence of his free-spirited friends Sid and Nancy lead him to question the constraints of his upbringing. Britten's opera humorously examines themes of societal expectation, personal freedom, and the journey to self-discovery, all set to a vibrant and expressive score.

Albert Herring premiered in 1947 at Glyndebourne and was Britten's foray into comic opera, offering a humorous counterpoint to his earlier, more serious works. The libretto, by Eric Crozier, is based on Guy de Maupassant's novella Le Rosier de Madame Husson, transposed to a Suffolk setting familiar to Britten. The opera's light-hearted yet incisive commentary on societal norms and individual agency has secured its place in the operatic repertoire. This ENO production not only marks the company's first staging of the work but also reflects its commitment to bringing Britten's legacy to new audiences - don’t miss this major revival of this riotous but lesser-known work.
