It is one of Shakespeare’s best-known and best-loved comedies, and has been performed all over the world and reinterpreted in myriad ways since it was written over 400 years ago.
The History of As You Like It
As You Like It is one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved pastoral comedies, believed to have been written in 1599 or early 1600. It was first published in the First Folio in 1623, but no earlier quarto version survives. The play is thought to have premiered at the Globe Theatre, captivating Elizabethan audiences with its mix of romance, wit, and disguise. Based on Thomas Lodge’s prose romance Rosalynde, Shakespeare’s version transforms the story with greater emotional depth and clever wordplay. Set in the idyllic Forest of Arden, it explores themes of love, gender, exile, and nature versus society.
As You Like It remains a popular choice for modern productions, thanks to its engaging heroine and witty philosophical musings, including the famous “All the world’s a stage” monologue. The Creative Team of As You Like It
As You Like It is written by William Shakespeare.
This production is co‑directed by Associate Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe and former Artistic Director of the Lyric Hammersmith, Sean Holmes (Romeo and Juliet, Pinocchio), and writer-director Charlie Josephine (Pinocchio, Cowbois), who also stars as Orlando. Design is by Paul Wills (The Comedy of Errors, The Tempest) with further creative team to be confirmed.
