What is the play Born With Teeth about?
“Oh, Jesus bless us, he is born with teeth! And so I was, which plainly signified that I should snarl and bite, play the dog” - Henry IV, William Shakespeare
It’s the winter of 1591, and England is a dangerous place for artists: ruled by an authoritarian regime, ravaged by plague, and rife with censorship and conspiracy. In the back room of a tavern, writer, actor and newcomer to London William Shakespeare meets with infamously rakish poet Christopher Marlowe to work on a play about Henry VI. What follows is flirtation, collaboration, and a scathing battle of the wits. Over the span of three secret meetings, these literary geniuses sharpen their tongues and their quills, and in between duels and rapier-sharp retorts, let their creativity soar. But with spies around every corner, paranoia abounds, and betrayal is oh so tempting...
Born With Teeth first premiered at the Alley Theatre in Houston in 2022, following development at Shakespeare and Company in 2019, and was also produced in 2023 and 2024. The play won the 2021 Edgerton Foundation New Play Award and the Houston Theater Awards 2022 Best Play/Production and was a finalist for the Steinberg-ATCA New Play Award.
This “devilishly clever and fun” (KLCC) play reimagines the relationship between two of England's most celebrated playwrights with a “quick-witted punk sensibility” (Houston Press). Wordplay and power struggles combine in this hilarious, shocking and absolutely unmissable new play.
