What is the opera Cinderella (La Cenerentola) about?
Rossini’s La Cenerentola, or “Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant”, reimagines the classic fairy tale with a few twists. Gone are the glass slipper and fairy godmother; instead, we meet Angelina, a kind-hearted young woman oppressed by her vain stepsisters and their pompous father, Don Magnifico. Her fortunes change when she encounters Prince Ramiro, who, disguised as his valet, seeks a bride who values virtue over wealth. With the help of his wise tutor, Alidoro, and a case of mistaken identities, love and kindness ultimately prevail.
First premiering in 1817, La Cenerentola offered audiences a fresh take on the Cinderella story, emphasising human virtues over magical interventions. By replacing the fairy godmother with the wise Alidoro and the glass slipper with a bracelet, Rossini and librettist Jacopo Ferretti crafted a new twist on the classic tale, celebrating kindness, intelligence, and forgiveness.
This new ENO production continues that tradition, presenting a Cinderella who is both relatable and inspiring, blending humour and heart and showcasing Rossini’s signature bel canto style, with dazzling arias and ensembles that highlight the characters’ emotional journeys.
