Coriolanus is the brutal opening production in the RSC’s critically acclaimed Rome season, transferring to the Barbican this winter. This powerful exploration of violence and identity arrives in the West End for a strictly limited run this November.
Launching the RSC’s much-anticipated Rome MMXVII season at the Barbican this winter is director Angus Jackson’s incendiary adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. Starring the up-and-coming talent Sope Dirisu, this powerful war story viscerally explores the brutal formation of identity for both its titular hero and the Roman republic.
Shakespeare’s tale follows Caius Martius Coriolanus, an accomplished and fearless soldier who has the reins of leadership reluctantly thrust upon him. When his aspiring mother begins carving a path towards political power, Coriolanus struggles to change his nature and do what is required to attain greatness.
With a widening schism between rich and poor the Roman fuse is lit, threatening an explosion of violent civil unrest. Our titular hero must decide where his true allegiances lie.
Following his sell-out hits of Oppenheimer and Don Quixote in Stratford-upon-Avon, critically acclaimed director Angus Jackson leads this thrilling opening production in the Rome MMXVII season. Rising star Sope Dirisu takes the role of the conflicted hero, following his lauded performance in One Night in Miami at the Donmar Warehouse.
The beautiful battle-worn city aesthetic is designed by Robert Innes Hopkins, with lighting by Richard Howell. The production is scored by Mira Calix, with sound design provided by Carolyn Downing.

Iqbal Khan helms a spectacular adaptation of Anthony and Cleopatra, with Blanche McIntyre concluding the season with the tale of Titus Andronicus.
This arresting tale of war, ambition and identity makes its way on to the Barbican stage for a limited run from the 6th to 18th November 2017.
