What is the opera Dead Man Walking about?
Dead Man Walking tells the true story of Sister Helen Prejean, a nun who becomes the spiritual advisor to Joseph De Rocher, a man sentenced to death for a heinous crime. As Sister Helen navigates the emotional turmoil of the victims' families and the condemned man, she confronts profound questions of faith, forgiveness, and the human capacity for redemption. Dead Man Walking presents a poignant narrative that challenges audiences to reflect on the complexities of justice and compassion.
The opera is based on Sister Helen Prejean’s ground-breaking 1993 memoir, which recounts her experiences as a spiritual advisor to death row inmates. The book was adapted into a 1995 film of the same name starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn, which earned critical acclaim and was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, with Sarandon winning the trophy for Best Actress. In 2000, composer Jake Heggie and librettist Terrence McNally transformed the story into an opera, which was also a critical success and won several awards. Dead Man Walking has since become one of the most performed contemporary operas worldwide.
