What is The Elixir of Love about?

Lady of the Manor Adina has kept her feelings for estate worker Nemorino hidden for a long time. He thinks she isn’t interested, so seeks the help of Dulcamara, a travelling salesman who deals in miracle cures. After drinking one of Dulcamara’s love potions, Nemorino learns to play it cool - and soon he is hot property for the Land Girls and farmhands! But can he persuade Adina to choose him over charming rival Belcore?

Set on a country estate during World War II, this joyous production of The Elixir of Love frames the story as a sitcom, amping up the laughter and missed opportunities as the two main characters search for love.

Gaetano Donizetti’s Opera Buffa

Italia composer Donizetti wrote this opera buffa (comic opera) in a swift six weeks, and it was the most-performed opera of the 1940s. With its earnest message about the sincerity of emotion, it remains hugely popular amongst modern audiences and is a fantastic option for newcomers to the genre.

Donizetti was a leading figure in the development of the bel canto style, and his other works include Don Pasquale. In The Elixir of Love, his compositions create fantastic moments of warmth and emotional depth, such as the famous aria “Una furtiva lagrima” (“I saw the tear”).

Creative Team

The English National Opera welcomes new faces to its company for this production, including director Harry Fehr and Austrian-Spanish conductor Teresa Riveiro Böhm. Fehr has directed operas across the UK, US and Europe, with critics praising his “simple and yet highly intelligent and effective” (Music OMH) style.

The cast includes soprano Rhian Lois as Adina and Brandon Cedel as Dulcamara.
