About the Giselle Ballet

Romance and betrayal collide in this intense story of a woman’s sacrifice for the man she loves. Young peasant girl Giselle is hopelessly in love with Albrecht, who has hidden his true identity - and his engagement to another woman - from her. When his lies are exposed, Giselle falls into madness and dies from heartbreak.

In the afterlife, the Wilis gather at her graveside and invite her to join their sisterhood of jilted brides, where they will take their revenge on men who wronged them. Will Giselle choose to let her love dance to his death, or will her feelings save him from an ugly fate?

Akram Khan and the Creative Team

French composer Adolphe Adams’ haunting and atmospheric Romantic ballet is transformed by one of the UK’s best choreographers, Akram Khan. Khan is celebrated for his emotional and innovative approach to classical and contemporary dance and has staged productions including Creature, inspired by Frankenstein and World War One-themed piece Dust with the English National Ballet.

His fusion of dance styles - usually Kathak and contemporary - brings a fresh and exciting edge to his work that appeals to a broad audience.

In Giselle, Khan’s confident and striking imagery begins when the curtain rises, as dancers clad in shadow push against a wall. With its atmospheric lighting from Mark Henderson and foreboding set by Academy Award winner Tim Yip, the mesmerising world of a condemned factory and the ghosts that haunt it draws audiences in.

Adams’ score is adapted by Vincenzo Lamagna and performed live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic, in an “electrifying and visceral performance that redefines the traditional narrative while retaining its emotional core” (The Guardian).
