Women reclaim the Arabian Nights

Witness stories retold and reclaimed by candlelight at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, in Hakawatis: Women of the Arabian Nights. This new play by Globe Resident Writer Hannah Khalil (The Fir Tree) draws on the Tales of the Arabian Nights in a celebration of storytelling’s unifying powers.

A tyrannical man takes revenge on his unfaithful wife by marrying, sleeping with and killing a new woman every day. Now only five brides-to-be are left, and they have a story to tell. Determined to keep themselves and womankind alive, this bold and unapologetic group invites you to hear their vision of the future.

This powerful and intimate production is created in collaboration with Tamasha Theatre Company and directed by their Artistic Director Pooja Ghai (Lions and Tigers). Hannah Khalil’s Hakawatis play also features contributions from Hanan al-Shaykh, Suhayla El-Bushra and Sara Shaarawi.
