Inspired by the relationship between Earth and Humanity, Hot Mess is the ultimate rom-com musical for any theatre fan in 2026.
Hot Mess in London
Jack Godfrey and Ellie Coote’s “blazing musical about Earth and humanity’s toxic love affair” (The Guardian) returns to the stage following its triumphant debut in Birmingham, Edinburgh and London in 2025. Take your chance on a hopeful new musical and experience a fresh perspective on the climate crisis at The Other Palace, located just a short walk away from Buckingham Palace.
What Is Hot Mess About?
Told through the infectious narrative of a rom-com, Hot Mess explores the relationship between Earth and Humanity. Earth has been waiting for over a billion years for someone to come along that she can relate to, and when she meets Human, she thinks her luck has finally changed. But things start to become toxic between the pair when Human begins to take her for granted by not clearing up his mess, and begins to develop an interest in other planetary bodies. Hot Mess is a musical that ultimately shows the climate crisis as a relationship on the brink of collapse.
The History of Hot Mess
Previously entitled This is a Love Story, the production was both performed on the stage at the Dundee Rep and live-streamed in 2021. After developing the productions and creating new songs, the show was given a new title of Hot Mess and was commissioned by Vicky Graham Productions in its debut at the Birmingham Hippodrome.
Hot Mess went on to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2025, starring Danielle Steers as Earth and Tobias Turley as Humanity. It was hugely popular and ultimately made its first transfer to London, where it played at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant. It is the first production to transfer to the city from Birmingham’s in-house New Musical Theatre Department, launched in 2023.
Hot Mess Musical Creative Team
