What is the play Ivanov about?
Has Nikolai Ivanov ever been happy? Or has he just forgotten how? Despite his flourishing career and his loving marriage, Nikolai can’t help but feel like his world is falling apart. Could it be his ever-growing debts, the distaste of his parents-in-law, his relentless partying, or perhaps the mysterious illness plaguing his wife that is causing his melancholy? Or does he just need to get it together and rediscover his lust for life? When Nikolai heads to a party at his friend’s, the Lebedevs, it seems like the perfect chance to shake off his worries and get his groove back.
But as Nikolai stumbles from mishap to mishap, trying to put on a happy face, something unexpected causes his fortunes to begin looking up - an affair. In the fallout of his infidelity, can Nikolai turn his life around, save his marriage, fix his career and restore his will to live all in one fell swoop?
History of Ivanov
Ivanov was written in 1887, when Anton Chekov was commissioned to write a comedy for the Korsh Theatre, Moscow. Instead, Chekov wrote Ivanov, which was initially a drama, in only ten days. After the play’s debut, Chekhov undertook extensive rewrites, displeased with the work, and it later premiered fully in St. Petersburg in 1889, in its current dramatic-comedy form.
The play has since had many revivals, adaptations, translations and reinterpretations, including productions adapted by David Harrower for the Almeida and Chichester Festival Theatre, by David Hare for the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, New York, and by Tom Stoppard for Wyndham’s Theatre, which starred Kenneth Branagh. This bold new reimagining from writer-director Simon Stone explores all the highs and lows of Chekhov's original while firmly transplanting the action into modern day.
