What Is the play John Proctor is the Villain About?
In a rural Georgia town in 2018, a high-school honours English class sit down to study Arthur Miller’s The Crucible - but the teens are more preoccupied with sex, gossip, who’s making out with who, and conducting ‘witch hunts’ of their own than with a stuffy old play about the Salem witch trials.
As they try to figure out their place in a post-#MeToo world, a group of girls faces pushback from their conservative school administrators when they try to found a feminist club, and as they delve further into The Crucible, they start to question everything they previously thought about the play. Is its flawed yet celebrated protagonist, John Proctor, truly the hero their teacher purports him to be?
Both a response to and re-examination of The Crucible, John Proctor is the Villain flips the script on an American classic with a fresh new perspective that asks who the hero really is - “after watching it, you will never view ‘The Crucible’ in the same way again.” (Washington Post).
The History of John Proctor is the Villain
John Proctor is the Villain premiered in Washington DC in 2022. Following a further successful professional staging in Boston, the show made its Broadway debut in 2025, starring Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, and took an unusual path to New York - previously having been licensed for almost 100 non-professional productions, at high schools and colleges beforehand. The show’s Broadway premiere was a smash hit and earned seven Tony nominations. In 2025, a film adaptation, co-produced by Sadie Sink and Tina Fey, was greenlit, with Bellflower adapting her own script.
The production, which made its European premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in Spring 2026, sold out its entire run. The upcoming West End transfer to Wyndham’s Theatre is a result of the high demand and popularity of this show!
