What is the play Jumpers about?
Jumpers is set in an alternative Britain where a Radical Liberal Party has taken hold of the government, and Britain has put a man on the moon. The story follows George Moore, a Professor of Moral Philosophy, who is struggling to write a lecture on the existence of God, and his wife, Dotty, is a fallen musical star. The next day, after a party is held at their house, the police arrive, not to acknowledge an anonymous complaint made by George but to investigate a murder that took place. Dotty is the main suspect. Jumpers is an interesting combination of comedy, murder mystery and deep philosophical debates about the existence of God and moral values.
Jumpers made its stage debut at the Old Vic Theatre in 1972, where it was directed by Peter Wood. Subsequent productions of Tom Stoppard’s play have been performed globally in Australia and on Broadway, before its last London revival at the National Theatre in 2003. David Leveaux directed this production, which transferred to Broadway, and received a Tony Award nomination for Best Play Revival.
