What is the play Kenrex about?
It’s 1981 in small town Skidmore, Missouri, and Ken Rex McElroy rules the roost. McElroy is a monstrous bully, and despite a list of crimes spanning over a decade, his slimy and corrupt defence attorney has ensured that he has never been prosecuted.
McElroy has theft, assault, abduction and even attempted murder under his belt. But when he shoots the town's beloved greengrocer, Bo Bowenkamp, in broad daylight, leaving him for dead, the people of Skidmore come to a breaking point. The community rallies together and decides that if the law won’t put a stop to McElroy’s reign of terror… they will.

Kenrex is co-written by performer Jack Holden and director Ed Stambollouian.
Jack Holden performs all roles in a “virtuoso solo performance” (The Stage). Holden’s credits include War Horse in the West End, BBC drama Marriage with Sean Bean and Nicola Walker, and Ten Percent for Prime Video. His one-man play, Cruise, which he wrote and starred in, premiered at the Duchess Theatre in 2021 and was nominated for an Olivier Award.
Holden is accompanied by onstage musician John Patrick Elliott, who also composes the music for the show. Elliot is an award-winning musician and composer for stage and screen. He has previously collaborated with Holden on Cruise, for which he won the Stage Debut Award for Best Composer. A multi-instrumentalist, Elliot has previously released solo projects, and work under the genre-crossing collaborative project The Little Unsaid.
Ed Stambollouian directs. His credits include Night School at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Animal Farm at the Royal and Derngate Theatre and Family Voices & Victoria Station at the Trafalgar Theatre. Stambollouian was associate director on Jamie Lloyd’s Trafalgar Transformed Season, which included The Hothouse starring Simon Russell Beale and Macbeth starring James McAvoy. Stambollouian also directs comedy and is a long-term collaborator of Joe Lycett.
