King Charles III Tickets
Transferring to the West End from the Almeida Theatre, King Charles III is a political drama that imagines what could happen in the event of the Queen’s death and the subsequent reign of the next in line to the throne, Prince Charles.
Debuting on the West End following a highly successful run at the Almeida Theatre, King Charles III transfers to the Wyndham’s Theatre for a limited engagement. Rupert Goold directs Mike Bartlett’s political drama about the potential outcome of Charles taking the throne.
The play opens as the royal family return from the Queen’s funeral. Charles then holds his first ever audience with the Prime Minister. Reminiscent of the Leverson Inquiry, the Prime Minister discusses a new bill passed through the Commons and the House of Lords that needs the new King’s royal assent. As the new King is reluctant to sign a law that would essentially gag the press, allowing government to censor the news, he and the Prime Minister get into a heated argument. The Prime Minister threatens to create a new law that bypasses the need for royal assent but the King quickly reacts by dissolving parliament, sparking unrest across the country.
King Charles III examines the devolved power of the British Monarchy and makes it very clear where the power lies. Initial casting included Tim Piggot-Smith as Charles, Adam James as the fictional Prime Minister Tristram Evans, Oliver Chris as Prince William, Richard Goulding as Prince Harry, Margot Leicester as Camilla and Lydia Wilson as Kate / Princess Catherine.
Following a successful run at the Wyndham’s Theatre, King Charles III will transfer for a short engagement to Broadway and will play in Sydney, Australia as well as embarking on a UK tour.
