What is the musical Kinky Boots about?

When Charlie Price’s father unexpectedly dies, he inherits the family business - Price and Son, a shoe factory in Northampton that is down at heel. As Charlie struggles to revive the failing business, his relationship with pushy fiancée Nicola becomes strained when she encourages him to sell the factory to a corporation that wants to turn it into flats, and Charlie is at risk of losing not only his relationship but the livelihood that meant so much to his father. Downtrodden, Charlie can think of no other solution... then in sashays Lola, a drag artist in need of a sturdy pair of heels. With the help of Lola and assembly line worker Lauren, who is harbouring a secret crush, Charlie sets to work designing the ultimate “kinky boot”, hoping to tap into a niche market and save the factory. But not everyone is happy about working with a drag queen, and Lola has troubles of her own… Will Charlie and Lola be able to save Price and Son, or will their differences cause them to stumble?

Kinky Boots is based on the 2005 film of the same name, which starred Joel Edgerton and Chiwetel Ejiofor and drew inspiration from a remarkable true story. The show premiered on Broadway in 2013 with Pose star Billy Porter playing the fabulous Lola. It snagged six Tony wins, including Best Musical, and later transferred to London’s West End, where it won three Olivier Awards. In 2014 the production won a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. This fierce new revival comes to the West End following a fabulous UK tour in 2025.
