La Traviata Tickets: See The World’s Most Popular Opera

One of opera’s towering achievements, Verdi’s impassioned and stirring La Traviata returns to the London Coliseum in a new production by the English National Opera this year. This passionate tale of love and sacrifice will draw you in with its gorgeous melodies and heart-wrenching story - a tale so famous and compelling that it inspired Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge!.

The La Traviata Story

Fervent but doomed romance blooms between courtesan Violetta and romantic Alfredo Germont. When Violetta turns away from a life of glamour for the man she loves, she is met with judgment and resistance from fashionable society. Alfredo’s father asks her to give up her chance of happiness, but will she make the ultimate sacrifice?

La Traviata is a masterful and captivating opera set to Vedi’s soaring romantic score. The grandeur of party scenes and decadence gives way to tender intimacy and tragedy, and the tumultuous emotions at the heart of this story make it one of the most beloved works in the operatic canon.

The La Traviata Composer

La Traviata is one of the most famous works by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, whose other work includes Otello, Falstaff and Aida. La Traviata is one of his three hugely successful mid-career operas alongside Rigoletto and Il trovatore, and they contain some of the most emotive, soaring and well-known music in the genre.

At the English National Opera, Richard Farnes returns to conduct La Traviata, with a cast including soprano Nicole Chevalier as Violetta, Jose Simerilla Romero as Alfredo and Roland Wood as Giorgio Germont.

La Traviata Songs

Even if you have never seen an opera before, you are sure to recognise at least one song from La Traviata because it has worked its way into popular culture through adverts, films and radio.

Some of the best songs include “Brindisi” (The Drinking Song), a lively number that bubbles with hedonism, energy and good times in Act I; “Addio del passato” in Act III, which combines the hope of the earlier acts with the devastating tragedy of La Traviata’s final moments; and “Sempre libera”, one of the best pieces for a soprano and the perfect depiction of Violetta’s free spirit.

My first Opera, it was actually an enjoyable experience with some incredible orchestrations, singers, solos and setting choices simply undertaken. I attended opening night and did feel that the pause between "acts" was a little longer than usual.

Fairly new to Opera (not classical music though), so the 5 stars are for the wonderful singing and the sublime orchestra. The staging was somewhat odd - but it did not distract from the sublime music. What was annoying was people thinking they cou Read more

To my surprise the show was in English (I'd prefer Italian), the surtitles make it very easy to follow the story, though. Nice voices, beautiful music and wonderful costumes and acting. The only negative was the bland background, just curtains and mo Read more
