What is the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses about?
In the glitz and glamour of French high society, money talks, reputation rules, and the patriarchy holds power - and if a woman makes a single mistake, it can ruin her for good.
But the Marquise de Merteul is a master of survival, and she leverages her intelligence and influence, keeping a tight grasp on the control she wrests over her estate and her ward Cécile. Opposite the Vicomte de Valmont, seduction is strategised, and desires are wielded as weapons - until the two have a bitter falling out. Now rivals, the former lovers are each determined to bring about the other's destruction - and they don’t care who is caught up in their path…
Les Liaisons Dangereuses is based on the 1782 French novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. It was first adapted in 1985 by Christopher Hampton, and was staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, starring Alan Rickman and Lindsey Duncan, and later transferred to London. The play was later adapted into a film starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Uma Thurman and Keanu Reeves. The play has since been performed both in the UK and internationally, but this bold new National Theatre production marks the show’s first major revival since 2016.
