London Tide Tickets On Sale Now

Charles Dickens meets the fierce musical talents of PJ Harvey in the “strikingly staged” (The Guardian) London Tide at the National Theatre. Opening with a body pulled from the Thames and expanding to tell the stories of two young women and their families, this sprawling adaptation of Our Mutual Friend is packed with romance, intricate storytelling and tension.

About London Tide

As a storm rages across the city and the night settles into darkness, a body is pulled from the Thames. Across London, two young women look with trepidation at their uncertain futures.

In Limehouse, Lizzie Hexam struggles to escape the river’s dark secrets. Far away, on the other side of town, Bella Wilfer mourns her lost marriage. When mysterious and enigmatic John Rokesmith appears, he might be the key to their lives changing forever.

But will they sink or swim?

Inspired by Charles Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend, romance and thriller collide in this “transfixing” (Daily Telegraph) show, which grounds itself in London’s history and geography - most of all around the river that has run through and sustained its people for hundreds of years.

Cast and Creative Team

London Tide marries the genius storytelling and characters of Dickens with the lyrical beats of acclaimed singer-songwriter PJ Harvey (“Down by the Water”), whose original songs form the rhythmic heart of the show.

It is directed by Ian Rickson (Translations; The Weir) and adapted by Ben Power (The Lehman Trilogy).

The cast of London Tide includes Bella Maclean as Bella Wilfer, Ami Tredrea as Lizzie Hexam, Tom Mothersdale as John Rokesmith, Penny Layden as Mary Wilfer, Stephen Kennedy as Reg Wilfer, Crystal Condie as Miss Potterson, Joe Armstrong as Roger Riderhood, and Jake Wood as Gaffer Hexam.

Brilliantly acted by all involved with a few stand outs, the music by PJ Harvey was atmospheric, rhythmic, catchy and worked perfectly with the theme and setting of the show as a perfect enhancement to the story (sometimes musicals can almost distrac Read more

Loved this show so much. Unbelievably good theatre, direction and performances. I cannot believe it is over, so soon. I can only hope they will release a cast album or even a PJ Harvey album of these songs.

Underrated play with music, interpreting Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend." This was intelligently staged on a very minimalist set and beautifully performed. Not a musical but enjoyable tunes which enhanced the play (but then I love musicals!)
