What Is the Dance Show Maddaddam About?

Those who remain must find a new way of life.

A non-linear, multi-sensory epic set across three acts, for the three books in Atwood’s Trilogy, Maddaddam follows a mismatched group of people who must do what it takes to survive as they navigate a not-so-distant dystopian future, created by a bio-engineered apocalypse. As greed and hubris collide with ecological collapse, a scientist works to perfect the homo sapiens race by uncovering a new chapter in their evolution. Will the survivors be able to hold on to what makes them human in the face of extinction?

The History of Maddaddam

Margaret Atwood’s trilogy was first published in 2003 with the release of the first book in the series Oryx and Crake. The series continued with The Year of the Flood in 2009, concluding with Maddaddam in 2013. Though the books were released subsequently, Atwood has stated the action takes place across each of the three books at the same time. Oryx and Crake was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Orange Prize for Fiction upon its release, and was later adapted as an opera.

The dance adaptation of the trilogy premiered in 2022 in Canada before making its UK premiere at the Royal Opera House in 2024, where it sold out the run.
