Theatre Royal Haymarket

John Caird directs the hugely successful McQueen starring Stephen Wight, which transfers to the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Following an uncertain journey of Britain’s most prolific designer, McQueen allows the audience to glimpse into his strange, complex and beautiful mind, when he has a chance encounter with a mysterious girl.

Following a critically-acclaimed sell-out premiere at London’s St James Theatre, James Phillips’ revelatory new play McQueen transfers to the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket for a limited season. Delving into the beautiful and complicated mind of British fashion’s most notorious contemporary artist, McQueen charts a strange voyage into the world of Alexander McQueen.

Taking place on a singular London evening, McQueen steps into the visionary imagination and dark dreamland of McQueen as he meets a girl that inspires him. After watching the Mayfair house for eleven consecutive days, a girl decides to break in to steal one of his legendary dresses and become someone special. When McQueen catches her, instead of calling the police, together they embark on a journey through London and into his heart. A play about beauty, art and imagination, McQueen sees two troubled souls connecting over comfort that they desperately crave.

Directed by John Caird (Children of Eden, Les Miserables), Phillips’ pertinent play stars Stephen Wight (The Ladykillers) as Lee Alexander McQueen, alongside Carly Bawden (Assassins) as the mysterious Dahlia, who was previously played by Glee’s Dianna Agron. Additional cast members include Tracy-Ann Oberman (EastEnders, Earthquakes in London) as Isabella Blow, Laura Rees as Arabella and Michael Bertenshaw as Mr Hitchcock.

McQueen sees Phillips’ second major West End play performed, after Hidden in the Sand at the Trafalgar Studios, and it has been adapted and slightly rewritten since opening at the St James. His previous works include The White Whale, City Stories and Camelot: The Shining City. The production features design by David Farley, lighting by David Howe, sound by John Leonard and choreography by Christopher Marney. Enter the complex mind of one of the world’s greatest designers in a play about love, redemption and above all, inspiration.
