A brand new, reworked version of historical drama Mrs Lincoln returns to Charing Cross Theatre, just off Embankment, for a strictly limited run. Starring The Greatest Showman’s Keala Settle, Mrs President tells the previously untold story of Mary Todd Lincoln - the wife of Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States - as she struggles for agency in a male-dominated world. This dazzling history play is a portrait of an often misunderstood political figure as you’ve never seen her before. This “powerful portrayal of grief” (Indiependent) explores Mary’s volatile life and her legacy as First Lady - you won’t want to miss it.

What is the play Mrs President about?

Mrs President tells the story of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln as she struggles with her grief following the loss of her children and the assassination of her husband; with her mental health; and against the envious detractors who are determined to smear her with accusations of treason. In an attempt to rebuild her fractured reputation and win back the hearts of the American public, Mary turns to Matthew Brady - one of the world’s first celebrity photographers - a man who previously helped her husband in his presidential campaign. But what begins as a collaborative partnership soon spirals into a battle for creative control, as Mary fights to tell her story and take control of her image in a world that is determined to silence women. This powerful new play gives a voice to a resilient and determined woman oft-maligned by history, as she navigates a turbulent life.

The production first premiered at the Charing Cross theatre in March 2025, and returns this January in a bold new reworked version, following further dramaturgical development and workshopping in New York City.

Who are the creative team of Mrs President?

Mrs President is written by artist and historian John Ransom Phillips, marking his debut as a playwright, with direction and new dramaturgy by Olivier Award nominee Bronagh Lagan (Cruise, Flowers for Mrs. Harris) with movement director and associate director Sam Rayner (Back to the Future). Set and costume design is by Anna Kelsey (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) with sound design by Eammon O’Dwyer (Never Let Me Go), lighting design by Derek Anderson (Company) and video design by Matt Powell (The Elixir of Love).
