Acclaimed choreographer Wayne McGregor turns his hand to directing, making his ENO debut with the heart-wrenching 18th century opera Orpheus and Eurydice. See this sublimely melodious and lovingly choreographed production at the London Coliseum from 1 October 2019.
Composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, Orpheus and Eurydice is based on a story from Greek mythology. It was first performed for Empress Maria Theresa at the Burgtheater in Vienna in 1762. The piece includes the exquisite ‘Dance of the Blessed Spirits’, which is a classical staple. Created in collaboration with Studio Wayne McGregor, this new production features a libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline in a version by Hector Berlioz.
The grief-hounded Orpheus will stop at nothing to retrieve his wife Eurydice from the clutches of the underworld. A chance to rescue her presents itself, but it comes with an almighty catch. In order to be reunited, Orpheus cannot look back at Eurydice, or he will be condemned never to see her again.
Mezzo Dame Sarah Connolly makes her return to ENO in the role of Orpheus. She is joined by company favourite Sarah Tynan who plays Eurydice, while ENO Harewood Artist Soraya Mafi performs the part of Love. In addition, 16 dancers from Company Wayne McGregor make up the cast.
Wayne McGregor is the Artistic Director of Studio Wayne McGregor as well as Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet. He was awarded a CBE in 2011 for Services to Dance.
An elegant and epic account of an iconic tale boasting a divine score, McGregor’s Orpheus and Eurydice is a feast for the senses. It plays at the London Coliseum from 1 October 2019.
