About the Sadler's Wells East
Sadler’s Wells East is part of the new East Bank cultural quarter in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Like its sister venues, Sadler’s Wells Islington and The Peacock in Holborn, the venue is a dance theatre and prioritises in-house dance production, as well as training courses for the choreographers of tomorrow. The venue opened in January 2025, overseen by the London Legacy Development Corporation, and was opened by London Mayor Sadiq Khan in an official ceremony in February of the same year. Sadler’s Wells East was one of the founding institutions of the East Bank district alongside the V&A East, and as part of the venue's ethos of contributing to cultural regeneration in the area, implemented a hiring initiative that ensures 50% of its staff must be from the boroughs of Hackney, Newham, Waltham Forest and Tower Hamlets.
The building was designed by architecture firm O'Donnell + Tuomey. It features an Italian red brick exterior with brick sourced from the Sant'Anselmo works in Venice, and sawtooth roofing in reference to the industrial heritage of Stratford. In 2026 it won a RIBA National Award. The theatre is owned and operated by the independent charitable trust Sadler’s Wells Trust.

Train: Stratford International Station is located approximately 5 minutes walk away from the venue, and has connections to National Rail services on Greater Anglia and Southeastern lines.
Tube: The closest underground station is Stratford, which is approximately 8 minutes walk away, and offers connections to the Central, Jubilee and Elizabeth lines, the London Overground, and Docklands Light Railway (DLR).
For the London Overground, Hackney Wick is the closest station, approximately 15 minutes walk away. Overground connections are available to Stratford, Dalston Junction, Highbury and Islington and Camden Road. If arriving by public transport, customers should follow the signs to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Bus: The venue is well served by buses, with the 108 and 339 stopping at the London Aquatics Centre and the 97 and 388 stopping at Westfield Avenue bus stop. Renovations are currently underway on Carpenters Road, behind the building, and once completed, the road will be served by a new bus stop directly behind the venue.
Car: Drop-offs are available at 101 Carpenters Rd, London, E20 2AR behind the theatre, or on Westfield Avenue. Stratford Westfield parking can be used, with car park B closest to the venue. Car parks A and B operate 24-hour entry and exit. Sadler’s Wells East is within the newly expanded ULEZ Zone and subject to congestion charges.
Nearby Attractions
The venue itself has two bars and cafes, as well as an internal foyer overlooking the Waterworks River. There’s plenty to do nearby, including the Pleasure Gardens and Tumbling Bay playgrounds for children, which feature giant sandpits, climbing frames and water features. The Pleasure Gardens playground also features a climbing wall, formed in the gap left by a bridge used during the 2012 Olympics and is popular with climbing enthusiasts.
Visitors can also check out Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park itself, or take a walk to Here East, a popular riverside destination with plenty of restaurants and bars. For some pre-theatre shopping, Westfield Stratford City is just a short walk away and has plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops.
To soak up some more culture, theatregoers can visit the V&A East art gallery, also a short walk from the venue.
