What is the musical Singin’ in the Rain about?

Singin’ in the Rain is based on the timeless MGM 1952 film, which starred Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. Set during the late 1920s, when the film industry was transitioning from silent movies to “talkies”, the musical follows Hollywood actors adjusting to this shift. Actor Don Lockwood falls in love with Kathy Seldon while struggling with his co-star Lina Lamont, whose voice is less-than-dulcet and isn't destined for stardom in talking pictures. Then there's Don's comedic sidekick Cosmo Brown, who injects light relief into the whole situation.

The original West End production of Singin’ in the Rain was staged at the London Palladium in the 1980s. Subsequent productions were staged on Broadway and in several West End revivals and UK Tours. Chichester Festival Theatre’s 2011 production is being brought back to the stage with a splash in 2027.
