About Spirited Away

Studio Ghibli’s Academy Award-winning film is the enchanting story of ten-year-old Chihiro, who stumbles into an incredible world of spirits ruled over by the sorceress Yubaba. Her parents are transformed into pigs and she ends up working in a magical bathhouse, but this little girl isn’t going to give up. She must use her wits and bravery to survive in her bewildering new environment, free her parents from the enchantment and return home.

Spirited Away: From Screen to Stage

The Spirited Away stage adaptation premiered at Tokyo’s Imperial Theatre in 2022, adapted and directed by Olivier and Tony Award winner John Caird and co-adapted by Maoko Imai. Caird is best-known as the director of epic West End musical Les Misérables and has brought his eye for the epic and exhilarating to this brand-new project.

The characters are brought to life with a combination of actors and breathtaking puppets, courtesy of puppet director Toby Olié. His creations, and the entire show’s astounding vision, takes imagination to the next level, and fans of the film can thrill in hearing the magnificent score performed by a live orchestra.

The Japanese production’s cast and creative team all transfer to the West End to present the European premiere of Spirited Away.
