What Is Suddenly Last Summer About?
Suddenly Last Summer centres on the mystery surrounding the death of Sebastian Venable, a wealthy poet who dies while on his summer vacation with his cousin, Catharine Holly. After Sebastian’s death, Catharine is sent to a mental institution by Sebastian’s mother, Violet Venable, who wants to suppress what Catharine knows about her son’s death. When Catharine’s memories are challenged, it falls to a young doctor to decide whose version of events to believe. Ultimately, Suddenly Last Summer is a play about family, trauma, and competing truths.
The original New York production of Suddenly Last Summer made its premiere in 1958 at the York Theatre. Subsequent productions, a film adaptation and a BBC TV play, were created over the years, with the last West End revival in 2004. Michael Grandage, who directed that production, brings Suddenly Last Summer to the National Theatre in 2027.

Dame Harriet Walter plays Mrs Violet Venable in Suddenly Last Summer. She is one of the most acclaimed stage actresses in the UK and has won multiple Olivier Awards and other accolades, including Tony and Drama Desk nominations. Her credits include Mary Stuart, Julius Caesar and Macbeth.
