What is the play Teeth 'N' Smiles about?

It’s 1969, and in a dilapidated basement bar at Jesus College, Cambridge, a rock and roll band prepares to play for a university ball.

While her bandmates may be skint, disillusioned, and feel they’ve sold out by performing at the stuffy university, all lead singer Maggie wants to do is perform… and drink. But tensions are high as Maggie quarrels with both the band’s controlling manager, Saffian and her ex-lover, songwriter Arthur, who is grappling with his lingering feelings for Maggie, as well as a blooming attraction to Laura, the band’s new assistant. As the band’s dreams of stardom slowly collapse, Maggie is determined to go on with the show. Fuelled by alcohol, rage and rock’n’roll, as the night draws on, Maggie struggles to keep her grip on the gig, and on reality…

Teeth 'N' Smiles first premiered at The Royal Court Theatre in 1975, starring Helen Mirren as Maggie. A subversive, rock’n’roll smash hit, during the show’s initial run at the Royal Court, The Who drummer Keith Moon arrived intoxicated at the stage door to lavish praise on Mirren - before trying to join the cast on stage, and being stopped by the theatre’s management!

This anarchic, trailblazing play about counterculture and artistic integrity returns to London 50 years on, in a landmark new production with updated music from Self Esteem.

3,5/ 4- for me. Good and worth visit but not the best show and I've seen over 100 other shows. I was expecting an even more shocking and engaging story, but the plot seems rather cliched. The great songs are a big plus.
