About The Constituent

An MP whose default reaction is compassion; an ex-serviceman whose life is in free-fall; and a parliamentary protection officer who’s having none of this nonsense.

BAFTA winner Anna Maxwell Martin stars as a diligent and committed opposition backbencher whose ideals of public office are put to the test by the increasingly alarming demands of a man in crisis, played by Tony Award winner James Corden. Joe Penhall’s (Blue/Orange; Mood Music) latest play is directed by Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus, following his hit productions of Present Laughter, Groundhog Day and Matilda the Musical.

James Corden in The Constituent

BAFTA and Emmy Award winner James Corden returns to the stage for the first time since his lauded performance in One Man, Two Guvnors to play Alec, a troubled man whose life has spun out of control. Since breaking into the US a decade ago, Corden has confirmed his place as one of the biggest names in showbiz. His credits include hit sitcom Gavin & Stacey, and he has a celebrated theatre career including The History Boys.

Anna Maxwell Martin plays Monica. She is best known for her standout roles in Motherland and Line of Duty, proving she is a master at both comedy and drama. Her stage credits include Constellations, Consent and Macbeth.

They are joined by rising star Zachary Hart as Mellor. Hart most recently appeared in An Enemy of the People in the West End.

What a good show for both James Corden (as the constituent) and Anna Mazwell Martin (as his MP) - showing how challenging the line is between supporting your constituents as an MP and not being able to be their friend.

This is a great show - strong performances from James Corden and Anna Maxwell-Martin, funny lines and a tone that is always edgy but darkens gradually - and then brings you to tears. An excellent production, probably the best thing I've seen all yea Read more

A very compelling play. James Corden's arc throughout is performed really well by him and Anna Maxwell Martin is equally excellent as the empathetic MP. I did not expect the denouement to take the direction it did.
