Tamsin Greig is devastating in this gorgeous revival of Terence Rattigan’s 1950s drama about a woman embarking on a hopeless affair.

Devastating Classic Drama With The Deep Blue Sea Tickets

Tamsin Greig gives a “seismic performance” (The Stage) as a woman caught between love and despair in Terence Rattigan’s The Deep Blue Sea at Theatre Royal Haymarket. Originally performed at Theatre Royal Bath, director Lindsay Posner’s revival of this classic 1950s play is a “claustrophobic and needle-sharp” (The Telegraph) study of one woman’s search for intimacy in post-war Britain.

The Deep Blue Sea Plot

Hester Collyer, daughter of a clergyman and wife of an esteemed judge, is struggling in the dying moments of an affair. She has left her husband for a younger man, but ex-Battle of Britain pilot Freddie Page isn’t what she expected or needs. Brash, scarred and lost in the shadow of the war, he is overwhelmed by the intensity of her passion, and unable to reciprocate in kind. As Hester finds herself stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, the watery depths seem like the only way out.

The Deep Blue Sea is one of post-war dramatist Terence Rattigan’s best plays and draws on themes of repressed emotions, obsessive love and isolation in mid-20th century Britain.

Tamsin Greig in The Deep Blue Sea

Tamsin Greig reprises her acclaimed performance as Hester following the show’s premiere at Theatre Royal Bath. She was praised for her “beguiling” (The Stage) portrayal of a middle-upper-class woman who yearns for connection but is repressed by society and a loveless marriage.

Greig is one of the UK’s best stage actresses. She consistently delivers powerful performances - whether as an Olivier Award-winning Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing or as an old-school Labour member in James Graham’s Labour of Love. On screen, she is known for comedic roles in Green Wing, Black Books and Friday Night Dinner.

Cast and Creative Team

Tony Award nominee Finbar Lynch (Girl From The North Country) joins Tamsin Greig in The Deep Blue Sea, reprising his performance from the play’s Bath season.

Terence Rattigan’s script is directed by Lindsay Posner, who is best known for his revivals of British comedies Noises Off and Abigail’s Party. With The Deep Blue Sea, he was praised for delivering an “intimate” (The Stage) and “artfully claustrophobic” (The Times) production that lingers in the mind long after the curtain has fallen.
