A Glass Menagerie Tickets On Sale Now

Alexandra Palace Theatre welcomes a giant of classic American theatre this year with Atri Banergee’s acclaimed revival of The Glass Menagerie, starring Geraldine Somerville (Gosford Park). Tennessee Williams’ semi-autobiographical masterpiece is a poetic and devastating portrait of a family standing on the brink of huge change, set in the cloying heat of the American South.

After wowing audiences during its premiere at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre in 2022, this “astonishing [...] adventurous” (The Guardian) production is in London for a strictly limited season.

About The Glass Menagerie

Love, loyalty and a desire for freedom are entangled in this masterful memory play, narrated by Tom. As he looks back on his younger years, Tom recalls escaping a suffocating home life through smoking cigarettes and going to the movies. At the same time, his sister Laura withdraws into her records and treasured collection of glass animals.

At the head of the family is their mother, Amanda Wingfield: determined and proud, she longs to create a better future for herself and her children. When Tom brings home a potential suitor for vulnerable Laura, Amanda sees an opportunity to change their luck forever… but will it work?

The Glass Menagerie was playwright Tennessee Williams’ breakthrough work, first playing in Chicago in 1944. Eighty years later, this intense memory play and its intimate depiction of one family’s struggles in Depression Era America remains one of the most famous US classics ever.

Cast and Creative Team

BAFTA nominee Geraldine Somerville (Gosford Park; Cracker) reprises her portrayal of Amanda Wingfield and is joined by new cast members Kasper Hilton-Hille as Tom, Natalie Kimmerling as Laura, and Zacchaeus Kayode as Jim O’Connor.

Director Atri Banerjee’s revival was a hit in Manchester and followed his acclaimed take on another classic, Hobson’s Choice. The creative team also includes designer Rosanna Vize, lighting designer Lee Curran, composer Giles Thomas and movement director Anthony Missen.

I read the script before hand and was surprised at the absence of any scene setting. It worked because I focused only on the actors and dialogue.
