What Is The Jungle Book About?
The Jungle Book centres on Mowgli, a human boy who is raised by wolves after being separated from his parents. He’s mentored by a panther called Bagheera and a bear called Baloo, who teach him the laws and dangers of navigating the jungle. Whilst there’s a central fight between Mowgli and Shere Khan, the tiger, this is a timeless story about family, identity, courage, and the conflict between nature and humanity.
The Jungle Book at the National Theatre Cast
Hiran Abeysekera leads this new production of The Jungle Book as Mowgli. His television credits include Russell T. Davies’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Find Me in Paris, but he is best known for his performance in Lolita Chakrabarti’s adaptation of Life of Pi. The production, which made its debut at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield in 2019 and went on to have a West End transfer at Wyndham’s Theatre, earned him an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance as Pi Patel. Hiran also recently starred in the title role of Hamlet at the National Theatre.

The Creative Team of The Jungle Book
Indhu Rubasingham, the current Artistic Director of the National Theatre, directs this new production adapted by Anupama Chandrasekhar. She worked on The Father and the Assassin at the National, which won a nomination for Best Play at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.
The production will feature puppetry by Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell, set and costume design by Rajha Shakiry, movement direction by Finn Caldwell, lighting design by Oliver Fenwick and sound design by Benjamin Grant. Composer Fernado Velázquez will also be involved in The Jungle Book.
