Escape into a world of whimsy, magic and incredible dancing this winter as The Nutcracker returns to the London Coliseum for its annual festive season. The classic ballet has been a staple of Christmas theatre in London for over 50 years, and English National Ballet Artistic Director Aaron S. Watkin’s new version promises to keep the spirit alive. Anything is possible in this enchanting production, so book your tickets early for a spot in the audience this year.

What is The Nutcracker ballet about?

It is a cold and frosty Christmas Eve in Edwardian London, and Clara is unwrapping a special present. As the paper falls off, an enchanted Nutcracker appears and whisks her off on a spellbinding adventure. In this magical new world, Clara meets handsome strangers, comes face-to-face with the terrifying Mouse King, and drifts high above the Land of Snow in a hot air balloon.

Exquisite dance, soaring music from Tchaikovsky and gorgeous visual storytelling make The Nutcracker a pure spectacle that will delight all ages, as an array of wonderful characters leap, pirouette and glide across the stage.

This year, enjoy a new re-telling of the classic tale, as over 100 world-class dancers and musicians transform the Coliseum into a winter wonderland. English National Ballet’s Artistic Director Aaron S. Watkin and Olivier Award-winner Arielle Smith choreograph a dance extravaganza, with sets and costumes designed by Dick Bird. As Clara absconds from her London home into a technicolour new world populated by the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy and handsome Cavalier, a rush of excitement and possibility sends a thrill through the auditorium.

A Christmas Classic With Soaring Music

Russian composer Tchaikovsky wrote The Nutcracker’s score, and even those newest to ballet and classical music will be familiar with the lively notes of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “The Nutcracker Suite”.

There is no better place to hear the opening notes and soaring melodies of this world-famous work than at the beautiful London Coliseum. Even five decades on, the dynamic mix of dance and music is still an exhilarating experience for theatregoers, who return time after time to enjoy the enduring magic of this award-winning production.

There are some great uses of screens and projections that had depth to the set pieces. The dance performances were exceptional. Compared to the ROH the sets were not as impressive but overall it was a fantastic performance.

The set design created wonderful painterly tableaux, for example in the beautiful opening skating scene, and the technical excellence and beauty of the dancing, especially by the lead dancers, was both spectacular and moving. The Nutcracker music, da Read more
