London Coliseum

The English National Opera’s hit revival of Gilbert & Sullivan’s farce returns for even more swashbuckling fun and catchy tunes.

Pirates of Penzance Tickets: Swashbuckling Fun!

Batten down the hatches and get ready to enjoy one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s best-loved operas, The Pirates of Penzance! The English National Opera’s smash-hit revival, originally directed by Mike Leigh, returns to the London Coliseum to deliver even more silliness, catchy music, and swashbuckling hijinks.

About The Pirates of Penzance

No production revels in pure silliness quite like The Pirates of Penzance. Bursting at the seams with absurd plots, wild and witty wordplay and brilliant songs, join an apprentice pirate as he attempts to woo the Major General’s daughter. Nothing is straightforward, however, and at the same time, his bumbling buccaneer-shipmates are trying to outwit a group of police officers!

Gilbert & Sullivan’s Irresistible Farce

Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera is a hugely popular sea-faring romp and has some of the most memorable melodies in the entire genre. From “‘I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General’ to ‘A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One”, audiences will soon find their toes tapping and shoulders shaking as the hilarious escapades get underway.

The dramatist and composer duo created several operas and operettas, including H.M.S. Pinafore and The Mikado. No matter the subject - and they covered everything from pirates to fairy courts and chaotic love affairs - they delighted in exploring their own topsy-turvy logic in which the absurd and the melodious rub shoulders.

Cast and Creative Team

Created and premiered by Mike Leigh (Mr Turner, Vera Drake) in 2015, this acclaimed staging is a vibrant, feel-good adventure directed by Sarah Tipple and conducted by Natalie Murray Beale.

The cast includes Richard Suart as the Major General, John Savournin as the Pirate King, ENO Harewood Artist Isabelle Peters as Mabel, and former Harewood artist William Morgan as Frederic.

Up to the usual very high ENO standards. Minimal but appropriate set. Orchestra really good. Cast very good tho the Major General could have been clearer. All the G&S humour came across. Well worth coming to one of my fave theatres again for operetta Read more

Very well done. Excellent cast. Didn't quite catch all of jokes but still funny. Minimalistic scenery meant needed to use imagination a bit.

I loved it - amazing singers, lots of silly lighthearted joking around, and quite a lot of familiar songs even as an opera novice. I was surprised by the modern stage design, although costumes were traditional, but they made it work.
