Famous actress Arkadina arrives at her family’s country estate and is confronted with her son, aspiring playwright Konstantin. Arkadina is a magnetic presence who draws the attention of everyone around her, and Konstantin is struggling to make a name for himself away from her. Meanwhile, Arkadina’s lover Trigorin has caught the eye of fledgling actress Nina. As this group of creatives converge across one weekend, their lives become entangled with insecurities, ambitions and resentment.Russian playwright Chekhov's taught and engrossing story is a powerful meditation on the sacrifices people make for art, and remains one of his most popular dramas alongside Uncle Vanya and The Cherry Orchard. Best known for his incisive portrayals of human psychology and relationships interspersed with dark humour, Chekhov’s plays are some of the most influential and enduring works to come out of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Cate Blanchett in The Seagull
Cate Blanchett stars as larger-than-life actress Irina Arkadina in this exciting new production. Blanchett is an incredibly versatile performer who has appeared in period dramas (Elizabeth), high fantasy (The Lord of the Rings) and intimate romances (Carol), and won two Oscars, two BAFTAs and several Golden Globes. On stage, she is just as compelling, with previous roles including an “emotionally charged” (The Guardian) Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire and a “tour de force” (The Sydney Morning Herald) Anna Petrovna in The Present.
Blanchett is joined in The Seagull by Tom Burke as Trigorin. Burke’s theatre credits include Rosmersholm at the Duke of York’s Theatre and he is familiar to a broad audience as Cormoran Strike in BBC’s Strike.
