The Story Tickets

National Theatre - Olivier, London

Opens 27th August

Letitia Wright leads this razor-sharp newsroom thriller about race and reporting - where chasing the truth can cost you everything.

The Story in London

Breaking news! The Story, a new play from award-winning playwright Tracey Scott Wilson, makes its UK premiere on the National Theatre’s Olivier Theatre stage, on scenic Bankside. The Story is “a riveting, tough-minded drama about race, reporting and the truth…” (Associated Press) that drops you into a high-pressure newsroom where every second counts and every angle has a price. This thrilling drama is directed by Death of England director Clint Dyer, and stars Black Panther’s Letitia Wright in her National Theatre debut. Secure your tickets for this limited run today.

What Is the Play The Story About?

In a fast-paced newsroom, the story is breaking, and the race to own it is on. When a white teacher is killed in a Black neighbourhood, reporters scramble for the headline that will define the day, and perhaps their careers. But as a controversial lead gathers momentum, an ambitious Black reporter pushes beyond the boundaries set by her editor, forcing the whole team into a pressure-cooker of competing agendas, rivalries and ethical fault lines.

What begins as a fight for a scoop becomes something far more combustible: a tug-of-war between truth and narrative, between what can be proved and what will be believed. The Story asks who gets to shape the public record, and what happens when the “right” version of events is the one that sells.

The History of The Story

The Story debuted off-Broadway at The Public Theatre in 2003. This National Theatre production marks the show’s UK premiere, putting Wilson’s writing in conversation with today’s media climate and Britain’s own debates around race, power and public narratives.
