What is the play The Weir about?
The tallest tales reveal the deepest truths.
As a storm rages outside, four men find shelter in their local pub in rural Ireland. Regulars at the pub, the men’s insular evening is shattered when a woman named Valerie arrives at the isolated tavern, having left Dublin under mysterious circumstances. In a bid to impress the newcomer, the men weave tales and tell stories of ghosts, fairies and local folklore, and as the night goes on and the alcohol flows, these haunting stories become more and more unsettling. But Valerie has a story of her own to tell, one that will shake the men to the core in the telling.
“A spellbinder that transfixes you like the Ancient Mariner’s tale” (Guardian), The Weir first premiered at the Royal Court in 1997 to critical acclaim, winning a Laurence Olivier Award and a Critics Circle Award, and has since transferred to Broadway and toured internationally. In a poll conducted by the National Theatre, The Weir was voted one of the 100 most significant plays of the 20th century. With this new production, Conor McPherson directs his stunning play for the very first time. The Weir is “unmissable” (Exeunt), so be sure to secure your tickets today.
