The Years Tickets - Time Slips Away, but Memories Linger Forever
The Years transfers to the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre, following sold out runs at the Almeida Theatre and Internationaal Theater Amsterdam. Based on Annie Ernaux’s critically acclaimed novel Les Annees, the play takes audiences on one woman’s personal and political journey throughout the years. A raw and unflinching look at womanhood, this “profoundly moving” (The Guardian) drama is not to be missed. What is the play The Years about?
“A dazzling history of a time and of a life”. Based on the Booker Prize nominated semi-autobiographical novel Les Annees - often considered to be Nobel Laureate Annie Ernaux’s defining work - The Years traces one woman’s journey through seven decades, marrying the personal with the political. Five actors portray the unnamed woman through each stage of her life, from daughter to Grandmother; a childhood in post-war Europe to a sexual awakening in the swinging 60s and onward through the conflict with Algeria and 9/11, to balancing motherhood, marriage and her career as a teacher. Shifting through the centuries, this inventive production blurs the line between past and present, memory and history, filtering decades of world history through one woman's experience.Who are the cast and creatives of The Years?
An all female cast of five actors portray one woman at different stages of her life, as well as taking on all other ensemble roles. The Years stars Deborah Findlay (Top Girls, The Split), Romola Garai (Emma, The Hour), Gina McKee (Our Friends in the North, Notting Hill), Anjli Mohindra (The Sarah Jane Adventures, The Bodyguard) and Harmony Rose-Bremner (Hamnet, Death in Paradise). Romola Garai will be performing through to Saturday 8 March, with further casting still to be announced.Based on Annie Ernaux's award winning novel Les Années, this new English version is by Stephanie Bain, translated and re-adapted from the innovative Dutch production De Jaren by Internationaal Theater Amsterdam’s Artistic Director Eline Arbo, who also directs.
