Unfortunate in London
The sea’s sassiest villainess is spilling secrets in Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch at The Other Palace, in the heart of Victoria! This outrageous adult musical comedy is back in the West End for a strictly limited run and is bigger, bolder and more bonkers than ever. With innuendo-laced lyrics, glittery tentacles, and an original pop soundtrack, this riotously filthy musical lovingly skewers the world under the sea. Unfortunate is a ”boundlessly energetic, beautifully belted musical parody”(Guardian) for fans of drag, divas, and all things deliciously dark - just leave the little ones at home!
What is the musical Unfortunate about?
Forget the fairy tales you grew up with: this is Ursula’s story, and she’s telling it on her terms - with attitude, magic, and unapologetic chaos. In Unfortunate, everyone’s favourite sea witch gets her chance to explain what really happened in the deep. Maybe she was just misunderstood? Maybe Prince Eric was overrated? And maybe Ariel wasn’t the innocent fish-girl you thought she was...
This cheeky parody musical reimagines the classic Disney villainess with brash humour, wild musical numbers and an eye-popping aesthetic. Expect songs like “How Unfortunate”, “We Didn’t Make It to Disney” and “Slap Her in the Face with a Fish”, with no shortage of squiddy sass.
Tackling gender roles, body image and villainy with a wink and a whirl, Unfortunate is gloriously queer, proudly plus-size, and wonderfully rude.
The History of Unfortunate
Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch started life as a small-scale Fringe production in 2019, where it rapidly gained a reputation for its quick wit, catchy songs and unapologetic adult humour. Created by the award-winning Fat Rascal Theatre, the show was a sell-out success in Edinburgh and went on to tour across the UK, selling out venues and earning five-star reviews. The show returned to the fringe in 2022, and in both 2019 & 2022 was named Theatre Weekly’s Best Musical of the Fringe and earned a Writers Guild Award nomination for Best Musical Theatre Book Writing in 2020.
The production gained further popularity through word-of-mouth, TikTok clips and its passionate fanbase, many of whom hailed it as a rare piece of queer theatre that gives a plus-sized woman the centre stage. After several reworkings and enhancements, Unfortunate is now back in a brand new de-fin-itive production - dubbed by West End Best Friend as “one of the funniest musicals I’ve ever seen” - combining all the chaotic energy of the original with fresh visuals, a re-orchestrated score and even more tentacle-twisting plot twists. The show was originally created by Fat Rascal Theatre, a company known for their feminist, irreverent and high-camp musical comedy.
