Wedding Band Tickets

Lyric Hammersmith

Alice Childress’ classic drama about interracial marriage in the American Deep South comes to London in a stirring new production.

Compelling Historical Drama With Wedding Band Tickets

A 20th century American classic comes to Lyric Hammersmith in 2024: Alice Childress’ Wedding Band is an intimate and moving drama about forbidden but enduring love in the face of bigotry. This “stunning, immediately real” (Seattle Times) story is a lesser-known gem from the 1960s, playing a limited season in London, so book now before it sells out.

What is Wedding Band about?

Set in the US Deep South in 1918 when interracial marriage was illegal, Wedding Band tells the story of black seamstress Julia and white baker Herman. Their love is viciously judged by society, and most painfully of all, by their closest friends and family. As they begin to reach their dream of a life together, tragedy strikes: Herman is struck down by the Spanish flu, and Julia has to make a life-changing decision to save him.

Who wrote the Wedding Band play?

Wedding Band is a powerful masterwork from award-winning American playwright Alice Childress, written during the Civil Rights era. Her other work includes Trouble in Mind, which was revived at the National Theatre in 2021 to great acclaim.

Childress’ work focuses on injustices, race and class, and the devastating effect of discriminatory laws on ordinary people’s lives. In 2022, she was posthumously awarded the Drama Desk Harold S. Prince Lifetime Achievement Award and her work continues to resonate with audiences over half a century after they were first written.

Wedding Band Creative Team

Wedding Band is directed in London by 2022 Stage Debut Awards winner Monique Touko, who helmed the critical and commercial hit School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play at the Lyric Hammersmith in 2023. Her other credits include Gone Too Far! at Theatre Royal Stratford East and We Need New Names on a UK tour.
