Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in London

Emmy winners Gillian Anderson and Billy Crudup star in this brand new revival of Edward Albee’s spiky, witty drama Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. When an embittered, quarrelling couple invite their newly married acquaintances over for drinks, what ensues is an explosive evening that will change everyone’s lives forever. Directed by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Marianne Elliot, this brand new in-the-round staging of the classic play comes to Soho Place, just off Tottenham Court Road, this September for a strictly limited run.

What Is the Play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf About?

Middle-aged couple Martha and George have been married for decades, and what was once a loving relationship has transformed into a twisted, toxic dynamic filled with power plays and games. When Martha unexpectedly invites Nick, George’s colleague, and Nick’s wife, Honey, to their apartment following a university faculty party, the younger pair are soon drawn into the elder's web of deceit. As the drinks flow, Martha and George’s games take on a heightened, sinister dimension, and truths about Nick and Honey’s seemingly perfect marriage are unveiled. By the evening's end, nothing, and no one, will be the same…

The History of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

The show premiered on Broadway in 1962. Unusually for a Broadway show, due to the play’s length - almost three hours - the production employed two casts, for matinees and evenings, frequently selling out both shows. The show made its UK debut in 1996, starring David Suchet and Diana Rigg, at the Almeida Theatre before transferring to the West End. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is now considered an American Classic, and has received many revivals and adaptations, with notable productions including a 2005 Broadway revival starring Kathleen Turner, a 2000 production with Patrick Stewart, and an iconic 1966 film adaptation starring Elizabeth Turner and Richard Burton.

The show has won multiple Tony Awards for its debut and various revivals, as well as a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play. In 1963, the play was selected for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but the award's advisory board objected to its sexual themes and strong language and overruled the awarding jury, with no Pulitzer Prize for Drama being awarded that year.
